We have received more photos of sandming on the Mvoti. The damage it is causing to the river and riverine environment is obvious.
Please ask your Hardware Store where they source their sand and stone from so that we can raise awareness about this. Quite likely they don’t know, but hopefully they will find out and start to think about the issue.
You probably enquire if the maize meal you buy is GMO free, if the fish is sustainable and the eggs free range, so why not sand from a source which cares about the environment?
If you spot any Sand Mining activity which you suspect may not be legal, or damaging the river excessively, please report to the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement component (essentially Green Scorpions). The CME sections are aligned to the District Municipality boundaries.
