The River Lion

A Poem by Preven Chetty, written following his walk down the Lion’s River last week.

You begin in the high vlei

r 1 high vlie

And ahead you see the valley

r 2 ahead you see the valley

The tumbling roaring cascades

r 3 tumbling cascades

But you have been robbed of your glory

r 4 robbed of your glory

Stolen from

your youth

Your prowl should have been

On the mountainside

Not channeled like this

r 5 not channled like this

If each foe or fiend

Were to flank your sides

r 6 flank your sides

More ignoble a doom I could

Not imagine for your time

Nor a sadder tune

as spears of tilled earth

7 spears of tilled earth

proclaim your ruin

r 8 proclaim your ruin

I see now why you hide from humanity

For they have scattered the last remnants of your pride

No more do I hear your mighty roar

No more do I hear your cry

You have a sanctuary I cannot find

For you have left the battles of mankind

You have a home

I’ve never seen,

You are a being

I’ve never been

r 9 being Ive never been

You are a trail

I cannot follow

r 10 trail I cannot follow

You are a river

riven shallow

r 11 riven shallow

About Nikki Brighton

I live in Howick, between the river and the hills. I enjoy pre-dawn walks in the streets with my dog, sitting on the veranda with crochet and tea, and harvesting vegetables outside the kitchen door.

That is so beautiful, Preven, and so sad. The challenge is – what can be done, by whom and how? There are some initiatives in the offing and we need to grasp any opportunity. Well done you River Walk guys! Peter Thomson

Thank you Peter. Yes there is the challenge, we need to be every ready to dialogue, to work together and to call to action and of course to respond to every opportunity. There’s an ancient Chinese saying, that one should jump at every opportunity, how do we know if its an opportunity? We don’t, we just keep jumping 😉 Peace and best wishes, Preven.
